There's Great Humor Content in Our Library

April Fool's Day is fast approaching, but the study of humor is serious business.

As a result we've decided feature some of the great content on the business of being funny that's available right now in our library and as a result can be easily integrated into course packs you make through the AcademicPub platform:

Mathematics and HumorA Study of the Logic of Humor (Paulos, John Allen), University of Chicago Press, 1982
John Allen Paulos cleverly scrutinizes the mathematical structures of jokes, puns, paradoxes, spoonerisms, riddles, and other forms of humor, drawing examples from such sources as Rabelais, Shakespeare, James Beattie, Rene Thom, Lewis Carroll, Arthur Koestler, W. C. Fields, and Woody Allen.  Upon its release, the New York Times noted that "jokes, paradoxes, riddles, and the art of non-sequitur are revealed with great perception and insight in this illuminating account of the relationship between humor and mathematics."
The Social Function of Humor in Interpersonal Relationships (Ziv, Avner), Springer Science + Business Media, 2010
The social function of humor may be considered to have two aspects. The first is that of the relationships within a group and the social system within which personal acquaintance and interaction between and among group members exist. The second is that of society as a whole or of social phenomena. Here, humor’s role being to reform certain aspects of social life. Bergson’s theory deals mainly with this “corrective” characteristic of humor. In this article, both of these aspects are discussed.
The Use of Humour Usage By Financial Advisors in Sales Encounters (Bergeron, Jasmin and Vachon, MarcAntoine), Emerald Publishing, 2008
This is believed to be the first paper to investigate the effects of humour usage in sales encounters in the financial industry. A better understanding of humour is useful for service providers owing to its mass potential, its low cost, and its positive benefits for customers and financial advisors alike.

Oxford University Press Headlines New Group of Content Publishers

New York, NY, March 14, 2012 - Ten leading academic publishers, including Oxford University Press, the largest university press in the world, have signed deals to distribute significant amounts of their content through AcademicPub™, the leading provider of print and digital custom course materials to the U.S. higher education market.

Caroline Vanderlip, CEO of AcademicPub™ parent company, SharedBook Inc., made the announcement.

Launched in April 2011, AcademicPub now counts 123 publishers in its content library, which collectively make available more than 2.5 million units of content for use on campus.

In addition to Oxford University Press, nine other respected academic publishers came on board today with AcademicPub. They are: Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Co., Happy About Publishers, IGI Global Publishing, Jessica Kingsley Publishers, Left Coast Press, Open Doors Group, Samfundslitteratur, Wayne State University Press and Wesleyan University Press. A complete list of publishers in the AcademicPub Content Library may be found here

"The level of interest in how to reinvent higher education textbooks and other course materials is high and growing," said Vanderlip. "All of the elements are in place for a major shakeup of the market, and what AcademicPub offers is at the center of each and every conversation."

Vanderlip explained that many students - and now instructors - are looking for alternatives to traditional textbooks, to gain greater portability, flexibility and currency. In the social sciences for instance, the fast-evolving nature of political and cultural developments is driving the need for more current course materials. And with the growth of e-readers coming at the same time that many students are realizing the nuanced differences between reading and studying, there is a growing consensus that platform-neutral content, available via print or any number and type of devices, is critical to a satisfying and productive academic experience.

What AcademicPub Can Do For You

As we continue to grow we thought it might be useful to step back and have a broader discussion about what the platform can do and how it truly revolutionizes the course pack creation process.

AcademicPub is a dynamic content aggregation engine that allows publishers, professors, and college bookstores to create, combine and distribute course materials in a way that had been impossible to this point, while saving students money in the process.

For professors and teachers, the platform provides the ability to mix and match content from a variety of sources including the web, their personal documents (.pdfs, Word documents, and PowerPoint presentations are all supported), and library containing over two and a half million pieces of pre-cleared content from over one hundred and twenty five publishers. Educators can then distribute their course materials to students via print or e-book formats.

For college bookstores, through Custom College Plus partnerships, the platform opens the opportunity to produce in-house materials in a way that serves the needs of professors and students on a custom, case-by-case basis.

For traditional publishers, AcademicPub opens the opportunity to sell their vast content libraries via a modern method, opening up opportunities for professors to pick and choose the content they want instead of eschewing helpful material based upon the high costs of the traditional texts to their students.

In addition our company allows, through a comprehensive White Label program, publishers to sell their own customized e-books, a particularly helpful innovation for smaller companies who wish to retain control of their content while providing customers with excellent custom textbook and e-book distribution at a reasonable cost.

It’s AcademicPub’s powerful, innovative features, however, that truly make the platform stand out. Real-time copyright clearance and pricing ensure that professors get the right material that they need without the need for the traditional waiting period at a reasonable cost to their students. A powerful faceted search engine allows users to sift through, preview, and choose the right material for their class faster than they ever have been able to before. The ability to include one’s own documents opens up a world of possibilities for lecturers, from class notes to syllabi to slides to personally written content on their subject of expertise. The ability to share projects with colleagues during the assembly process opens up the potential for peer and departmental review in building course packs and an easy method of collaboration in creating syllabi for multi-section courses.

On top of all these revolutionary features, AcademicPub offers an incredibly quick turnaround time. E-books are available for download instantly while print copies are processed and delivered within three to twelve business days.

The textbook market is ready for disruption.  Students are demanding more affordable options. Professors are demanding more control over their course materials. AcademicPub provides solutions for these demands by empowering educators and institutions while ensuring that students receive only the materials that they need, in the format that they desire.

We invite you to check out the platform for yourself. And also to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ or LinkedIn.

AcademicPub Goes Custom on Six More Campuses

Schools Attracted by Option for Cost Management, Copyright Compliance,
Complete Flexibility in Digital and Print Delivery

New York, NY, March 2, 2012 - AcademicPub™, the leading provider of custom books - print and digital - in the higher education market, today announced that six more colleges and universities have contracted for CUSTOM COLLEGE PLUS™, a co-branded custom publishing solution for institutions of higher education.

Caroline Vanderlip, CEO of AcademicPub parent, SharedBook Inc., made the announcement.

Piloting CUSTOM COLLEGE PLUS™ through an agreement with Barnes and Noble are Babson College and Boston University (BU), enabling these schools to mold the benefits of AcademicPub specifically to their campuses.

The other schools in the U.S. contracting for CUSTOM COLLEGE PLUS™ are Vanderbilt University, distributing through its Barnes and Noble store; and West Hills Community College in California, distributing through its Follett store. North of the border, Canadian signees include Mount Royal University (MRU) and the University of Lethbridge.

Separately, Columbus, Ohio-based Zip Publishing, which operates Coursepackets.net on 100+ U.S. college campuses, has contracted with AcademicPub.

"AcademicPub is an effective antidote to ever-rising textbook costs and, with an umbrella custom college arrangement, our solution can be applied to an entire campus, creating great savings across the board," said Vanderlip. "Our program is easily installable, either in conjunction with the designated bookstore or for direct student purchase."

Institutions participating in CUSTOM COLLEGE PLUS™ receive a co-branded AcademicPub web portal; custom-designed book covers with school colors and logo; font, alignment and trim-size options; eBook and professionally published output choices; and a repository of all custom course materials created.

Schools choosing bookstore distribution receive access to all of the above options, plus the ability to sell eBooks if the store is not already enabled. The bookstore retains full freedom to manage pricing, while gaining access to marketing materials to engage instructors and drive usage. The bookstore may choose to print through AcademicPub or a local vendor.

"Whether the program is through the bookstore or direct with the school, significant savings are achieved throughout the learning materials lifecycle," said Vanderlip. "Meanwhile, copyright compliance is streamlined, and timely delivery of content is assured."

The six partner schools and separate Zip Publishing arrangement revealed today join four previously announced CUSTOM COLLEGE PLUS™ (CCP) partners who launched the CCP program in early December 2011. They are: North Dakota State University, Palmer Chiropractic College in Florida, the University of Alberta in Canada, and CoursePacks Etc., an off-campus course pack provider working with approximately 30 North American institutions.

Last month, AcademicPub announced that 114 publishing partners are now part of the AcademicPub Content Library, providing more than 2.5 million units of content that may be utilized by instructors to build timely, custom materials for students. A complete list of content partners may be found here

AcademicPub will be exhibiting and speaking at the CAMEX Campus Market Expo 2012, March 2-6 at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, UT. Visit AcademicPub at booth #7028. A Product Spotlight featuring AcademicPub will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 from 2:30 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. Room: Ballroom Section H.
